Department Events and Awards
Outstanding Senior Department Award: The department’s highest award, it is given to one graduating senior each spring who is a major in the department. Selected by department faculty, awardees demonstrate superior scholarship (both through GPA and intellectual growth and development), involvement in department activities, events, organizations, and outstanding department citizenship in and out of the classroom. The recipient is recognized during the college’s Senior Awards Night and will have their name engraved on a perpetual plaque showcased in the department.
Excellence in English Studies Award (EESA): EESA recognizes the best critical essay or writing project written by a freshman or sophomore student in any 100 or 200-level English Studies course. Any first or second year student enrolled in an English Studies course during the academic year (Fall or Spring) is eligible. Professors teaching these courses may submit up to two essays from each section for consideration. Submissions will be judged based on originality, analytical acuity, stylistic clarity, and rhetorical effectiveness. Nominees are encouraged to present their work at the college’s Ribbons of Excellence Day, and the winner will be announced during the college’s annual spring Honors Awards Night. The award recipient’s name will be engraved on a perpetual plaque showcased in the department.
Creative Writing Awards: Each spring term, the Department of English Studies and Journalism sponsors a creative writing contest open to all students on campus. Judged by a professional writer from outside the college, students who place in the contest are awarded gifts and prizes during our annual Creative Writing Awards night, and their work is published in the college’s literary magazine, Oxcart. All students who submit their work to the contest are celebrated during the awards and are invited to share their work during an open mic.
