Changes to Your Family’s Financial Situation
Dear Adrian College Financial Aid Recipient,
A provision included in the American Rescue Plan requires institutions receiving aid from the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF III) to make financial aid applicants aware of the opportunity to receive a financial aid adjustment due to the most recent unemployment of a household family member or themselves, or for certain other financial hardships. Students facing this situation may inquire with the Adrian College Office of Financial Aid about completing a 2021/2022 Professional Judgement Form.
Professional Judgement refers to the authority of a school’s financial aid administrator to make adjustments to the data elements on the FAFSA. The school does not have the authority to change the need analysis formula itself or to make direct adjustments to the Expected Family Contribution (EFC). Instead, the school may make adjustments to the family’s income reported on the FAFSA as a result of the special circumstance. The standardized federal student aid formula is then applied to the new data elements, yielding a new EFC figure.
General Processing Information
The preferred deadline for this application (including all required supporting documentation) is August 1, 2021. Per federal regulations related to making adjustments to FAFSA data, consideration will not be given to applications and /or supporting documentation received after April 15, 2022, or two weeks prior to your last day of attendance, whichever occurs first.
Circumstances That Cannot Be Considered:
- Income reductions due to loss of overtime pay, bonuses, or commissions
- Income changes due to fringe benefit adjustments such as paid days off, holiday pay, employer-provided insurance coverage, etc.
- Loss of windfall income such as lottery or gambling winnings
- High consumer debt
- Circumstances for students who already have a ZERO Expected Family Contribution (EFC)
Please be aware that not all professional judgements result in additional financial aid. The decision of the financial aid administrator is final and there is not another option to appeal. By law, neither the school’s president nor the US Department of Education can override the financial aid administrator’s decision.
