Adrian College (AC) President Jeffrey Docking recently reached out to the Class of 2020 through an emailed video and asked which day during homecoming weekend they would prefer having their commencement. A vast majority immediately responded and said they preferred Sunday, Oct. 4 be reserved for their special day of recognition.
The AC president’s senior staff members offered several date options they thought would be best to host the graduation ceremony and ultimately decided on Homecoming weekend. President Docking suggested they ask the graduating students which day, Saturday, Oct. 3, or Sunday, Oct. 4, they preferred.
Out of a class of 29 graduate and 246 undergraduate students, 242 responded and 67.3 percent of them voted for October 4.
“I am very happy we checked with the students before making a decision,” Docking said. “We want our students and their families to be able to celebrate this special day as soon as possible, and when it is most convenient for them.”
This year’s commencement will be unique, but very much like any other held in the past, with adjustments made according to the state guidelines in place at that time. Commencement day events will be similar to the original May 3 date with tentative plans in place for programs, photographs of the students receiving their certificates and a class photo. Adjustments will be made for guest seating, the procession and recession, the Cane Ceremony and the party on the Caine Student Center terrace. Adrian College’s live Bulldog mascot, Bruiser, will also be on hand to congratulate graduating students.
President Docking will address students as the commencement speaker.
The ceremony will be held on Commencement Plaza unless there is inclement weather. The Merillat Sport and Fitness Center’s Blue Gym has been reserved as an alternate location.
