Ribbon-cutting ceremony officially opens Don Kleinsmith Writing Center

ADRIAN COLLEGE — The Don Kleinsmith Writing Center was officially opened on Adrian College’s (AC) campus during Homecoming, Friday, Oct. 5, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at room 133 in Caine Student Center. Professor Don Kleinsmith was honored for his many years of service to the AC English and business departments with the dedication ceremony, as well as a reception following the event.

Jim Mahony, AC vice president of development, opened the dedication by noting how the Kleinsmith name is “synonymous with Adrian College.” Mahony said we should all be grateful to Professor Kleinsmith for “making us better writers” during his 48 years of teaching at the college.

AC President Dr. Jeffrey Docking also spoke highly of Professor Kleinsmith during the ceremony. “He’s a gentleman. He’s a great teacher,” Docking said. “He told me he thinks professors and all of us should wear a tie to work every day. He understands these young people are looking to us as the leaders of college inside and outside of the classroom to learn how to be an adult. How should we dress? How should we interact?”

“We have never lost sight of the importance of writing, thanks to Jeff Docking,” Professor Kleinsmith said. “Many hours of writing have been turned into many years, 48 years, teaching at Adrian College.

“This successful service to our students continues through Dr. Linda Learman,” Kleinsmith added.

Professor Kleinsmith officially retired in 2015. However, at the time, the recipient of the college’s Faculty Hall of Fame Award said in a news article he planned to continue teaching “a couple courses in literature and writing to stay fresh.”

More than 50 people, including his wife, Louise, attended the ribbon cutting ceremony.

The mission of the Writing Center is to help all students across all disciplines and genres become more skillful, confident and independent writers. The Center offers a free, peer-centered service that provides students with one-on-one, individualized attention in a supportive atmosphere. Trained peer tutors do not edit, proofread or otherwise correct students’ papers; instead, they help students learn to identify and solve writing problems themselves.
